As soon as I saw the trailer for You I immediately thought "This is Gossip Girl gone wrong."
You originally aired on Lifetime in September of 2018 and was picked up by Netflix shortly after. Currently there is only one season available, but a second season has been confirmed.
The show is a psychological thriller based on a novel written by Caroline Kepnes in 2015. It follows the life of bookstore owner Joe Goldberg and Guinevere Beck who is an aspiring writer. What at first seems like an awkward crush spirals into the blurred lines between love and obsession.
Penn Badgley who is cast as Joe Goldberg also plays a character in the long running show Gossip Girl. Just like Joe, Badgely's character Dan watches his blonde love interest from afar. Joe Goldberg is much less endearing in You as time progresses, but the concept is still the same.
I really like that the show is done from Joe's perspective because one gets the opportunity to see things from his point of view. He has the idea that "love conquers all" and really is not afraid to show it. Not only does Guinevere Beck fall in love with Joe, the viewer starts to root for him too. Even though you know deep down, you probably should not be.
One reason that I believe that this show is so popular is because it makes you think about the problem of social media. Joe digs deep into Guinevere Beck's social media to find out who she is and it's all accessible to him. He finds out who her family is, her friends, where she frequently goes and where her home is. It all snowballs from there. It really makes the viewers consider their digital privacy and safety in a world filled with social media. One critic says "Creepy, yes? You will scare plenty of viewers into changing their online passwords" - The Mercury News
IMDB gives You a 8/10 and Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 91%. Rotten Tomatoes puts the general critic consensus as "You pairs thrilling drama with trashy fun to create an addictive social media horror story that works its way under the skin -- and stays there"
It has been confirmed that a second season will be happening- much to the delight of viewers who were left on a major cliff hanger. The release date has not been revealed yet, but my guess would be around summer or fall of this year, 2019.
