I, Tonya follows the rise and the fall of the figure skater Tonya Harding in the late 1980s and early1990's. Once incredibly famous for doing something no woman has done before, she has spiraled into infamy just as perfectly as her triple axel. In a world where figure skaters are seen as poised and ethereal, Tonya was simply herself - a victim of her environment.
I, Tonya got amazing reviews from IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic. The movie came out in 2017 and made 54 million at the box office. The movie stars Margot Robbie, Allison Janey, and Sebastian Stan among others.
The movie starts in a very authentic way, with "interviews"from people close to Tonya. These "interviews" continue throughout the movie helping the storyline and setting the background for the movie. The amount of detail that was put into this movie to be accurate (for the most part) is incredible. Here is a scene comparison.
This movie is not a happy movie by any stretch of the imagination, the use of comedy keeps you laughing but you almost feel bad about it. "Led by strong work from Margot Robbie and Alison Janney, I, Tonya finds the humor in its real-life story without losing sight of its more tragic -- and emotionally resonant -- elements" (Rotten Tomatoes)
The critics aren't the only ones who enjoyed this movie, it got many many awards. ( a full list for each nominated and won award here).
This movie is rough around the edges, but keeps you intrigued the whole way through. Margot Robbie is much more scary as Tonya Harding than she was as Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad movie. Even though she doesn't exactly look like Tonya Harding, she models her attitude perfectly. Allison Janney won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and she 100% deserves every bragging right for that. She completely immerses herself in her character.
This movie was around two hours long, and even though I was exhausted when I was watching it- I did not want to stop. This movie made me feel sympathetic for Tonya, but did not throw Nancy Kerrigan under the bus either. If you don't know the whole story behind Tonya's life I feel like it would be easy to just write this movie off. However, watching this you realize that Tonya is truly just a product of her environment. It's funny, tragic, and sad.
